Electric Blanket – Warm Up

by Kelly

With the cold season just around the corner, a lot of heaters are going to be used in homes all over the country. Although heaters are a great way to keep you warm, they can be expensive to operate. So what is the alternative? Well, you can get an electric blanket. These types of blankets aren’t new. They’ve been around since the early 1900′s and have become quite popular. There are something you will need to know before buying and using one though. This article will help you become aware of some of the dangers in using these blankets as well as what you can do to avoid some of these dangers.

When it comes to keeping warm at night, many people will use multiple blankets. This is fine but it can sometimes feel heavy on the body, making it uncomfortable to sleep. If you get one that is heated, this can solve the problem. There are basically 3 types of electric blankets that you can get. The first is a duvet top type that is placed on top of your blanket and can be turned on all night long.

The second type is the under blanket. These are primarily used to warm up the bed. It’s nice to be able to slide into a warm bed at night rather than a cold one. With this type however, you have to make sure you turn it off before you go to sleep. These are strictly used to preheat your bed. The third type of electric blanket is the extra safe under blanket. As the name suggests, these can be used under your blanket and can be turned on all night long.

Let’s now talk about some of the dangers of using electrical blankets. Every year, thousands of fires are caused by misuse of these blankets. That’s a scary though considering the fact that you will be right underneath one of these things. So here are some things you can do to make sure you use these blankets in a safe manner.

The first thing you will want to do is to always check the wiring before using the blanket. With any electric blanket, you should be able to feel the wire bulging up from the fabric. What you will want to do is simply run your fingers along the wire to see if there is any part of the wire that is being exposed. The next thing you will want to check for is stiffness. The blanket should be relatively soft and flexible. If you feel that some areas are stiff, especially where the wire is, then it could mean that the wire is damaged.

The third thing you will want to check is the wire leading from your blanket to the outlet. Make sure that everything looks okay and that there aren’t any cuts or damage. The last thing you will want to check is the temperature adjuster. You will want to make sure that when it is on the off position that it’s really off. If you find anything wrong with your blanket, you will want to avoid using it to be on the safe side.

In terms of buying an electric blanket, you have different choices to choose from. They can come in different types of fabrics as well as sizes. You will want to make sure you get one that feels comfortable to you as well as one that will fit your entire bed. You can choose from such material as wool, fleece, and cotton. You can get a king size electric blanket, a double electric blanket, as well as all other sizes. When purchasing, you may want to go down to the store and see how the fabric feels. You can also find and buy these blankets online as well. They typically run for about $50 – $100 or so. There are different options for the adjuster as well. Some may have a timer where it will automatically shut off while others don’t.

As long as you make sure you use your electric blanket properly, it can be a great way to keep you warm without having to increase your heating or electricity bills too much. Even if you are using your blanket safely, one more downside is that it can sometimes be difficult to get out of bed in the morning when your room can be so cold while the bed is so warm.
