Impaction is where larger particles follow the curve of the air stream and are forced into embedded fibers. Diffusion is a result of the collision of gas molecules by the smallest particles. It’s an enhancing mechanism. They are delayed in their path through the filter.
It is probable that a particle will be stopped by either interception or impaction. This is dominant at lower air flow velocities. Their efficiency increases over a lifetime. Filters will have a number assigned to them if they are able to trap at least 99.97 percent of particles of .3 microns. This information is printed on the filter. These filters are known as true or absolute type filters.
True HEPA room air cleaners are recognized as the best form of air filtering. They are the only form of purification toll recommended by the US Government’s Department of Homeland Security and FEMA. Products such as Honeywell HEPA air cleaners capture 99.97% of the pollutants in the air around it. Imitation filters will be made similar to real filters and may look the same but don’t meet the same standards of real or absolute filters since they only capture between 85%-90% of harmful particles. So although they are less expensive, they do not have the same quality.
Filters are used in vacuums, room and home air circulation systems, and ionizers. Depending on the product used, it may last from between four to five years. Many filters require replacement every two to three months.
